The History of Recipes
We can track the history of meal recipes far back into the far past, in truth as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early cook books were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were two interesting books which date from the 1300s - a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of food enjoyed by the rich and powerful of the period. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new herbs and spices created an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, many of which are kept safe in private libraries. Over the succeeding few centuries, the upper classes competed with each other to serve the most exotic meals, and consequentially chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The TV revolution gave us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Amaretto Freeze recipe.
