The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of written recipes far back into ancient history, at least as far as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old records were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a collection of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `blissful`. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled some scripts describing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main meal and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. He also informs us how the ancient Romans made use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as thyme, mint and asafoetida. For the centuries that followed, the rich and powerful families of the West competed with each other to serve the most exotic banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their recipes were much in demand. Even so, it was during the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The introduction of the TV gave us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
We hope you enjoy this Amigdala Praline (Almond Praline) recipe.
