The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be found way back into the far past, at least as far into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, in the main part, these early recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have some recipe books from the 14th Century ; a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these are unconnected to the indian curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the menues of the rich and wealthy people of the time. When we get to the 20th century, cooking books are in great demand, due to better eduction, people having more free time and having more disposable income. |
