The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be tracked back into antiquity, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, sadly, these early recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are two books from the fourteenth century ; one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are not about the indian curry that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals on the tables of the nobility of the time. Over the following few centuries, the powerful families of Europe strove to lay on the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. By the arrival of the twentieth century, recipe publications were starting to become popular due to more people being able to read, people having increased free time and having more money. The introduction of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Amish White Bread recipe.
