The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked way back into the far past, in truth as far back into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, these, ancient cook books were just primitive pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts is a collection of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `blissful`. Moving on, we have a couple of interesting books dating from the fourteenth century - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are unconnected to the indian curry that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared for the upper classes. During the following few centuries, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipes became highly prized. However, it was during the 19th century that cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes of the day. By the advent of the 1900s, cooking books are in great demand, due to more people being able to read, people having increased leisure time and disposable income. |
