The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked back into distant history, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early cook books were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Moving on, we find two interesting cookery books from the fourteenth century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books have no connection with the indian curry that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of food on the menus of the rich. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices like parsley and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices created an outbreak in books on cooking, many of which still exist in private libraries. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
