The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existance of recipes way back into distant history, in fact as far into history as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, generally, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were some books from the fourteenth century : a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they have no connection with the spicy food that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared for the nobility of the period. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations was responsible for an explosion in manuscripts on cookery, some of which are now in private libraries. Over the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of the West strove to serve up the best banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The introduction of television brings us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
