The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of recipes back into ancient history, at least as far as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, generally, these ancient recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated. Closer to modern times, we have two interesting books dating from the 14th Century ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are not about the curry that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the upper classes of those days. During the succeeding few centuries, the upper-class families of Europe competed with each other to serve the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections were much in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
