The History of Recipes
Food historians have tracked the existence of recipes back into antiquity, at least as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, generally, these old cook books were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are some recipe books which were published in the 14th Century : a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books have no connection with the spicy food that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the menues of the rich. In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and spices from Arab countries, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created an explosion in manuscripts on cookery, many of which are now in academic collections. The introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on this web site. |
