1 hot fruit (apples, cherries)
POUR INTO A CASSEROLE DISH
2 tbsp sugar
2 egg whites
4 tbsp boiling water
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
Directions
Add ingredients in order, mixing as you go. Pour over fruit and bake
at 350 for about 30 minutes.
This is surprisingly good. Ginger is an unusual spice in apple
things, but it works nicely.

The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of meal recipes back into history, in fact as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, generally, these early records were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef recounts how the early Romans used a good variety of herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as basil, mint and dill. For the decades that followed, the wealthy families of the West strove to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and because of this the best chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and cookery books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the time we get to the 20th century, cooking books were starting to become popular as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased spare time and being a little richer. |
