1 hot fruit (apples, cherries)
POUR INTO A CASSEROLE DISH
2 tbsp sugar
2 egg whites
4 tbsp boiling water
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
Directions
Add ingredients in order, mixing as you go. Pour over fruit and bake
at 350 for about 30 minutes.
This is surprisingly good. Ginger is an unusual spice in apple
things, but it works nicely.

The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existance of recipes back into distant history, certainly as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, generally, these ancient cook books were just basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful. During the time of the Roman Empire a man called Apicius compiled a number of scripts detailing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also tells us how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of many spices and herbs, including many that are still in use today such as basil, mint and parsley. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as parsley and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted an outbreak in manuscripts on cooking, some of which are now in private collections. By the arrival of the 20th century, recipe publications are highly popular mostly due to higher levels of literacy, more free time and having more disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
