1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 each egg, lg
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cup unbleached flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cinnamon, ground
1/2 tsp salt
6 oz cheddar, sharp, shredded
1 1/2 cup apples, cored,peeled,chopped
1/4 cup nuts, chopped
Directions
Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, then stir in the
egg and vanilla. Add the combined dry ingredients, blending well.
Stir in the cheese, apples and nuts. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls of the
dough onto an ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees F. for
15 minutes. Remove from the cookie sheet and cool on a wire rack or
plate.

The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed way back into ancient history, at least as far as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius describes how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, main course and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius tells us how the ancient cooks made use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example thyme, rue and asafoetida. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from the holy lands, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new herbs and spices led to a torrent in books on cooking, some of which are now in private cookery archives. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this site. |
