The History of Recipes

Academics have found proof that recipes existed way back into the distant past, in truth as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, these, ancient cook books were just very simple pictorial recipes for food preparation.

Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful.

Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts which described recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into appetizers, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius tells us how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of a good variety of spices, including some that we all recognise such as bay, rue and parsley.

In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices created an increase in books on cooking, many of which are now in private libraries.

During the succeeding few centuries, the powerful families of the West tried to offer the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to collecting, testing, and recording popular recipes of the day.

By the arrival of the 1900s, recipe books are starting to become popular due to more people being able to read, people having more leisure time and a general increase in wealth.

Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this recipe site.
