The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of `recipes` back into the distant past, in fact as far as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, something we still use today. He also informs us how the cooks of Roman times used many different herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as bay, fennel and dill. During the following few hundred years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe strove to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their collection of recipes were at a premium. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The arrival of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
