The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of `recipes` way back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, sadly, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics are some tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts detailing recipes prepared by the Romans. He tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, entrees and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also informs us how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of a wide range of spices, including many that are still in use today for example thyme, mint and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new culinary innovations led to a surge in books on cookery, many of which still exist in private cookery archives. By the advent of the 20th century, cooking publications are highly popular as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having more free time and having more disposable income. The revolution that is television brought us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
