The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existance of recipes way back into distant history, in truth as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these old cook books were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated. During Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of documents which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, main meal and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius describes how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as basil, fennel and parsley. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from the East, including parsley and basil. The introduction of these new herbs and spices led to an eruption in manuscripts on cookery, most of which still exist in academic collections. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
