The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed back into antiquity, in truth as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, these, early recipes were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians are some clay tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts which described recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also informs us how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including many that are still in use today like basil, mint and dill. During the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of the West tried to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, testing, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site. |
