The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of written recipes far back into antiquity, in truth as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these ancient records were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some clay tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some documents which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals were divided into starters, main course and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius informs us how the ancient Romans made use of a good variety of spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like bay, rue and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from the holy lands, including coriander, parsley, and basil. These new foods and tastes led to an increase in recipe publications, most of which still exist in private libraries. The revolution that is television gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Apple Pie #3 recipe.
