The History of Recipes
Food historians have tracked the existence of recipes way back into history, in truth as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, generally, these early cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
During the time of the Romans a man called Apicius created a number of scripts describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef tells us how the ancient cooks made use of a wide range of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like basil, mint and parsley. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations caused an increase in cookery books, many of which still exist in private collections. The arrival of TV brings us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
