The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions way back into distant history, certainly as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early records were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful. As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of documents describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals were split into starters, main meal and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also informs us how the Romans were skilled in the use of a wide range of spices and herbs, including some that we all recognise such as basil, fennel and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas was responsible for an eruption in recipe publications, most of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site. |
