The History of Recipes
Academics have traced the existence of recipes way back into antiquity, certainly as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, early recipes were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few documents describing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius describes how the ancient Romans made use of many different herbs, including some familiar names for example bay, fennel and parsley. During the following few hundred years, the wealthy families of the West competed with each other to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes common in their social group. The arrival of television brought us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
