The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed back into history, in truth as far into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early cook books were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated and blissful. Closer to modern times, there are two interesting recipe books which date from the 1300s : a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they are not about the curry that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the menus of the upper classes. During the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most exotic meals, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. However, it was during the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down popular recipes of the day. By the arrival of the 1900s, recipe publications are starting to become popular mostly due to better eduction, leisure time and a general increase in wealth. |
