The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be found far back into the far past, in fact as far into history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, generally, these early cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful. During the time of the Roman Empire a man called Apicius compiled some documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also informs us how the ancient Romans used a good variety of herbs, including many that are still in use today such as thyme, mint and asafoetida. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from the holy lands, such as rosemary and coriander. These new foods and tastes caused an increase in cookery books, some of which still exist in private collections. The introduction of television brought us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
