The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be tracked way back into distant history, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, generally, these early cook books were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we find two interesting recipe books from the fourteenth century ; a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these have no connection with the curry that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared for the upper classes of that period. Over the succeeding few centuries, the powerful and wealthy houses tried to serve up the best banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording the recipes of their peers. When we get to the twentieth century, cook books are increasing in popularity due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased free time and having more disposable income. The TV revolution gave us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
