The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of meal recipes way back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, these, old records were just very basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe in existence, according to historians is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, there were a couple of cookery books dating from the fourteenth century - one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they have no connection with the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the menus of the rich people of those days. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices like coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas was responsible for an explosion in publications on food, most of which are now in private libraries. For the next few years, the upper-class families of the West competed to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipes were much in demand. However, it was during the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing the recipes of their peers. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
