The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be observed way back into ancient history, at least as far back as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further. However, these, early cook books were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians is a series of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `blissful`. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have two recipe books which were published in the 1300s : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they are unconnected to the curry that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the nobility of the period. Over the following few centuries, the rich families of Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent meals, and because of this chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. When we get to the 1900s, recipe books were highly popular as a result of higher levels of literacy, more spare time and having more money. The arrival of TV brought us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on this site. |
