The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be observed back into antiquity, certainly as far back into history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, generally, these ancient records were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a series of tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are a couple of recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century - a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are nothing to do with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of food served to the rich people of the time. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the wealthy families of the West competed to serve the most exotic meals, and as a result the best cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. However, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. When we get to the twentieth century, cooking books were highly popular mostly as a result of increased literacy, more leisure time and a general increase in wealth. The TV revolution brought us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site. |
