The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of written cooking instructions far back into distant history, in truth as far into history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. However, these, old recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians are a few stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel exhilarated. As we move into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts which described recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also tells us how the cooks of Roman times used a wide range of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as basil, rue and dill. Moving on, we find two interesting recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century ; one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are unconnected to the spicy food that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from Arab countries, including parsley and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices caused an eruption in manuscripts on cookery, many of which are now in academic collections. By the advent of the 1900s, cookbooks are starting to become popular mostly as a result of more people being able to read, people having more leisure time and having more money. The revolution that is television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Bacon~ Lettuce & Salsa Sandwich recipe.
