The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` way back into the far past, at least as far back as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. However, mostly, these ancient recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to food historians is a collection of clay tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful. Later, we have two recipe books which were published in the 14th Century ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are not about the indian food that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of food enjoyed by the upper classes of that time. During the succeeding few hundred years, the families of Europe strove to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. By the arrival of the 1900s, cookbooks were starting to become popular due to increased literacy, leisure time and a general increase in wealth. |
