The History of Recipes
Historians have found proof that recipes existed far back into the far past, certainly as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early records were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created some documents describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius recounts how the cooks of his times made use of a good variety of herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise for example bay, fennel and dill. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from the holy lands, including spices such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted an explosion in recipe manuscripts, some of which are now in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
