The History of Recipes
Historians have found proof that recipes existed far back into the far past, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, mostly, these ancient cook books were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated. Closer to modern times, we find two interesting cookery books dating from the 14th Century ; a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are unconnected to the spicy food that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menus of the rich and powerful. During the succeeding few hundred years, the families of Europe tried to serve the most exotic banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Bailey's Marbled Cheesecake recipe.
