The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes way back into history, in fact as far back as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, generally, these ancient records were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful. As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius describes how the chefs of Roman times made use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as thyme, fennel and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices like basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations caused an explosion in recipe manuscripts, most of which are now in private collections. The revolution that is television brings us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
