The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes way back into antiquity, at least as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, sadly, these old recipes were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics are some tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated. As we move into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius describes how the Roman chefs used a wide range of herbs, including some familiar names for example bay, rue and dill. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from the holy land, including basil and coriander. These new culinary innovations created an outbreak in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are now in academic collections. By the advent of the 1900s, cookery books are greatly in demand as a result of better eduction, people having increased free time and having more disposable income. The revolution that is television gave us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
