The History of Recipes
We can track the history of meal recipes back into distant history, certainly as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the roman meals were split into appetizers, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef describes how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of many herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise like bay, fennel and parsley. During the following few hundred years, the rich families of Europe strove to lay on the most extravagent meals, and as a result cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Even so, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe collections really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The arrival of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
