The History of Recipes

We are able to track the history of `recipes` far back into history, in truth as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. In practice though, in the main part, these old records were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians are some stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated.

As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main course and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. He also tells us how the Romans used a good variety of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as thyme, fennel and asafoetida.

During the next few centuries, the powerful and wealthy tried to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households.

By the advent of the 20th century, cook books were increasing in popularity as a result of increased literacy, leisure time and having more money.
