The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of `recipes` back into history, certainly as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to historians is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few documents detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also recounts how the ancient chefs made use of many aromatic flavours, including a few you will know for example bay, fennel and dill. As we move on, there are two recipe books published in the 14th Century : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are nothing to do with the indian curry that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of food cooked for the rich and powerful. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and spices from Arab countries, including parsley, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs prompted a surge in books on cookery, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries. By the advent of the 20th century, cooking books were highly popular as a result of more people being able to read, people having more leisure time and having more money. The revolution that is television brought us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
