The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written recipes back into the far past, in truth as far into history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. In practice though, mostly, these ancient records were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Moving on, we have two interesting recipe books from the 1300s - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books are unconnected to the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the rich and powerful of that period. During the following few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe tried to offer the best banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, trying out, and recording recipes of the day. The revolution that is television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
