The History of Recipes
We can read the history of meal recipes far back into antiquity, in fact as far back as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. Having said that, mostly, these ancient records were just primitive pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius created a few documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were divided into starters, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also describes how the chefs of Roman times made use of many different spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like basil, mint and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the East, including spices such as basil and coriander. These new culinary innovations led to an increase in books on cooking, many of which are kept safe in academic collections. The revolution that is television brings us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this site. |
