The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked back into the far past, in truth as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, these, ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents which described recipes prepared by the Romans. In his works, he describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, something we still use today. He also informs us how the Romans used a good variety of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example basil, fennel and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from the holy lands, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas caused an explosion in books on cookery, most of which are now in private libraries. The TV revolution brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
