The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions way back into distant history, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, these, early recipes were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians are some ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful.

As we move into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a number of documents which described recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. This early Roman chef tells us how the ancient cooks made use of a good variety of herbs and spices, including a few you will know for example basil, fennel and dill.

Moving on, there were a couple of interesting cookery books dating from the 14th Century : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books have no connection with the spicy food that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared for the upper classes of those days.

Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from the East, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes created an explosion in cookery books, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives.

By the advent of the 1900s, cookery publications were increasing in popularity due to increased literacy, people having more free time and having more money to spend.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our web site.
