The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be observed far back into the distant past, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, these, ancient cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians are a few tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there were two books from the 1300s - one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are unconnected to the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals served to the rich and wealthy people of those days. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created an eruption in recipe publications, most of which are kept safe in academic collections. Over the next few hundred years, the upper classes strove to lay on the best banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. However, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The arrival of TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Banana Boat recipe.
