The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existence of recipes back into history, in truth as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. However, in the main part, these old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics are a few tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have some books which were published in the fourteenth century ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these are not about the curry that appears on menues today, but rather accounts of the types of food prepared for the nobility of those days. Over the next few centuries, the upper-class families of Europe strove to serve up the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best chefs and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes common in their social group. The introduction of television brings us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this site. |
