The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of meal recipes way back into the distant past, in fact as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. Having said that, these, early cook books were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a few documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, main meal and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. This early Roman chef tells us how the Roman chefs were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavors, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like basil, fennel and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as basil and coriander. These new spices and herbs led to a torrent in publications on food, the majority of which are kept safe in academic collections. The revolution that is television brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
