The History of Recipes
We can track the history of `recipes` back into ancient history, in truth as far as early Egypt, and maybe even further. However, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of scripts describing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, main meal and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius informs us how the chefs of Roman times used many different herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as bay, fennel and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many foods, spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including basil and coriander. These new herbs and spices was responsible for an eruption in manuscripts on cooking, many of which are kept safe in private collections. The revolution that is television brought us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
