The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be found far back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, early cook books were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are a few tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a Roman scholar, called Apicius, assembled some scrolls detailing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, entrees and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also describes how the cooks of Roman times used many aromatic flavors, including many that are still in use today for example thyme, rue and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices led to an outbreak in publications on food, many of which are kept safe in academic collections. The introduction of the TV brought us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
