The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be found back into distant history, in truth as far into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early cook books were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics is a series of tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some documents which described recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. He recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. He also recounts how the Roman chefs were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like bay, fennel and parsley. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from the holy land, such as parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes was responsible for an increase in manuscripts on cookery, most of which are now in private libraries. The arrival of TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
