The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of recipes back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, these, ancient recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians is a series of tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel blissful. During Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius created some scripts detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his works, he describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius tells us how the Romans made use of many spices and herbs, including some that we all recognise like thyme, fennel and dill. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices like basil and coriander. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted an outbreak in manuscripts on cooking, most of which are now in academic collections. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cooking publications were highly popular mostly due to better eduction, people having increased leisure time and having more money to spend. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
