The History of Recipes
Historians have found proof that recipes existed far back into antiquity, in fact as far into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, mostly, these old cookbooks were just basic pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
Closer to modern times, we find some books dating from the 14th Century - a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are nothing to do with the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful. When we get to the 20th century, cook books are starting to become popular due to higher levels of literacy, people having more leisure time and disposable income. |
