The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of recipes back into ancient history, in truth as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Having said that, sadly, these old recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel exhilarated and blissful. Closer to modern times, we have a couple of interesting cookery books published in the 1300s ; a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are unconnected to the curry that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of that period. During the succeeding few centuries, the rich families of the West tried to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cooking publications were increasing in popularity as a result of more people being able to read, increased leisure time and having more disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site. |
