The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` way back into history, certainly as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, in the main part, these old cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. During the time of the Romans a man called Apicius assembled some documents describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius recounts how the cooks of Roman times were skilled in the use of a good variety of aromatic flavours, including some familiar names such as thyme, rue and parsley. Over the next few hundred years, the powerful families of Europe competed with each other to lay on the most extravagent meals, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down popular recipes of the day. The arrival of TV brought us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
