The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of `recipes` way back into ancient history, certainly as far into history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, sadly, these old cook books were just primitive pictorial instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `blissful`. As we move on, we have a couple of interesting recipe books from the fourteenth century - a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these are not about the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the menues of the rich people of the period. During the next few centuries, the rich families of Europe competed with each other to lay on the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to assembling, testing, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe books were in high demand, due to more people being able to read, people having increased leisure time and disposable income. |
