The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of `recipes` far back into ancient history, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, generally, these early records were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `wonderful`. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled some scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he recounts how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of many herbs, including a few you will know such as thyme, fennel and parsley. For the decades that followed, the rich and powerful families of the West strove to lay on the best banquets, and because of this cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookery books were starting to become popular due to higher levels of literacy, more spare time and having more money. |
