The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existance of recipes far back into ancient history, at least as far into history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, generally, these ancient cook books were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated. During Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled some scripts detailing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef recounts how the chefs of Roman times used a good variety of spices, including a few you will know for example thyme, fennel and dill. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from the holy lands, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted an eruption in manuscripts on cooking, many of which still exist in private cookery archives. By the arrival of the 1900s, cookery books were in great demand, mostly as a result of better eduction, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
